Global Youth Service Day

"Global Youth Service Day brings schools, faith-based organizations and youth groups together to make a positive impact in the world," said Craig Wietz, president of Arlington Alliance for Youth.

In Arlington, most project planning began in January on the MLK Day of Service. Community service projects address a wide assortment of social issues such as health, literacy, childhood hunger and environmental conservation. All projects will culminate on GYSD.

According to Youth Service America, the organizer of GYSD, today's youth are uniquely suited to solve problems through volunteer service. Survey data also found that high quality service-learning leads to increased academic engagement.

Volunteering also improves career and workforce readiness. Today's youth who serve in their communities are also more likely to volunteer and vote as adults.

Arlington GYSD Chair Stephanie Brown is expecting hundreds of youth participants. GYSD participation also includes students from UT Arlington's Big Event.

"The Arlington Alliance for Youth is proud to service as the lead agency for this great day of service-learning. It's not too late to register," Mrs. Brown said.

About the GYSD City Celebration

Arlington will celebrate Global Youth Service Day during a City Celebration at the Levitt Pavilion in downtown Arlington on April 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Awards will be presented for outstanding service projects and youth leaders. The program will also include Mayor Jeff Williams and motivational remarks from special guests, including representatives from the NFL Retired Players Association. Young Life, a non-denominational Christian ministry, will serve hot dogs and refreshments. Music will be provided by DJ Diamond K. In a partnership with Arlington Independent School District, AISD-TV will be on site to document the day with interviews with youth groups.
