Live in Arlington: 5 Public Parks Told Through the Eyes of a Resident
By Landon Weslee Hearne
Posted on December 12, 2016, December 12, 2016

The City of Arlington recently launched a new website titled "Live in Arlington" for new home buyers looking to call The American Dream City their place of residence.

Arlington offers residents a strong, safe and fun community. From award-winning parks to play in, art and cultural experiences to inspire and activities that celebrate diversity. There truly is something for everyone.

Landon Weslee Hearne, a former intern with the City of Arlington's Office of Communication, compiled a list of five parks for nature enthusiasts and families to check out throughout The American Dream City.

1. River Legacy Parks
701 NW Green Oaks Blvd, Arlington, TX 76006

River Legacy Parks, the crown jewel of Arlington's park system, is located along the banks of the Trinity River in north Arlington. This 1,031 acre forest floodplain park is Arlington's segment of a visionary 75-mile greenbelt parkland from west Fort Worth through east Dallas. The forest includes 400 species of wildlife, 193 species of birds and 28 species of trees. With winding trails, open fields and many picnicking pavilions, this park is sure to be a welcome home to many joyous memories.

2. S.J. Stovall Park
2800 W Sublett Road, Arlington, TX 76001

Named after the man who served Arlington for more than 20 years, this 52-acre park has everything needed for a day of family fun. Miles of hike, bike and equestrian trails, sand volleyball courts and a pavilion that seats 150 people are just a few of the park's amenities. But it is the Bad Königshofen Family Aquatic Center, named for Arlington's sister city in Germany, that is not only the star of this park but is perhaps the best-kept secret in the Metroplex. It features an interactive spray pad, shallow water play pool, lap pool, diving area and two water slides. For more information on the Bad Königshofen Family Aquatic Center, including admission fees, please visit http://naturallyfun.org/pools/bad-konigshofen.

3. Vandergriff Park
2800 S Center Street, Arlington, TX, 76014

Located just a few miles south of downtown Arlington, Vandergriff Park features both the Allen Bolden Pool and the Bob Duncan Center. It has numerous recreation facilities including baseball fields, practice fields, tennis courts and a skate park. Planning a party? A pavilion that seats approximately 120 people is available for rent through the Arlington Parks Department by calling 817-459-5473.

4. Crystal Canyon Natural Area
1000 Brown Blvd, Arlington, TX 76011

The Crystal Canyon Natural Area is a 40-acre oasis set right in the heart of North Arlington. Dedicated on May 29, 2012, this park contains an incredibly diverse ecological profile, making it a nature lover's paradise. Although a small 9-space parking lot was built to accommodate visitors, preserving this area's natural resources was a key factor during the development of this park.

5. F.J. Red Kane Park
6500 S Cooper Street, Arlington, TX 76013

F.J. "Red" Kane Park was dedicated in 1995 as a mean to honor a true sportsman who used his aggressive, can-do attitude to impact change upon the City of Arlington. As a member of the Parks and Recreation board, Kane worked to guide Arlington through a time of explosive growth. The 23-acre F.J. "Red" Kane Park features a
basketball court, two playgrounds, a quarter mile trail, a duck pond and plenty of open fields to play in.
