Traffic Update: Johnson Creek Bridge on Abram Street Closed for Reconstruction from May to January

Drivers who regularly travel east Abram Street between Collins Street and Stadium Drive will need to plan alternate routes during reconstruction of the bridge over Johnson Creek.
The bridge, located east of Collins Street near Meadowbrook Park, will be closed starting May 15 and isn"t expected to reopen until January 2017. During bridge construction, thru-traffic will be detoured north to Division Street. Abram Street will remain open to two-way traffic on either side of the bridge so drivers will still be able to access businesses in that area.
"We realize that construction is a major inconvenience," said Keith Brooks, Public Works and Transportation Assistant Director. "We request and appreciate your patience and cooperation during these inconveniences, detours and delays as needed infrastructure improvements are constructed."
A new bridge will be built about nine feet higher than the existing bridge to help alleviate roadway flooding during heavy storms. The bridge is part of the Abram Street Rebuild Project from Cooper Street to the Grand Prairie city limits that Arlington voters approved nearly $22 million for in the 2008 bond election.
Brooks said the decision to close the bridge was made after careful consideration of several factors, including overall safety of construction workers and the traveling public, time for construction and estimated construction costs.
Abram Street is being reconstructed as a 5-lane undivided arterial between Collins Street and Stadium Drive. Besides the new, more elevated bridge, other enhancements will include wide sidewalks with landscaping, street lighting, storm drainage improvements and renewal of water and sanitary sewer lines.
The Abram Street Rebuild Project is an example of the Arlington City Council"s commitment to enhancing regional mobility. This portion of the bond-funded project is about $16 million.
