El Día in the Courtyard is a fun-filled Arlington Public Library event to celebrate diversity and literature. Everyone is invited to this new program at the East Arlington Branch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 7.
El Día in the Courtyard will promote the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds through community performances, activities, and a visit from an award-winning children's book team.
This year, the Library is excited to feature June Jo Lee and Man One, the author and illustrator of Chef Roy Choi. This children's book tells the true story of Roy Choi, a street cook from Los Angeles who started one of the first gourmet food trucks. Chef Roy Choi has been awarded multiple publishing industry honors and is on the Texas Library Association's 2018-19 Bluebonnet Award Master List.
June Jo Lee, a food ethnographer, and illustrator Man One, a graffiti artist, will both be at El Día in the Courtyard this year! Don't miss Man One's live graffiti demonstrations or June Jo Lee's author talks.
Then, enjoy live performances by local arts groups. El Día in the Courtyard combines the spirit of two popular Library programs, Día de los Niños and Courtyard Celebration, which focused on community involvement, children's literacy and performances by local arts groups. El Día in the Courtyard carries on this tradition with storytimes in different languages, performers, musicians, activities such as crafts, and more.
Performers include the Rankin Step Team, Thornton Ballet Folklorico, Tu Van Lion Dance Troupe, and Sam Houston's Club Cultura Mia Folklorico. Children who attend can receive a free snow cone from Kona Ice as well as a book to keep.
