UT Arlington distance runner Gabriela Alfonzo is among those who have received All-Academic honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the organization has announced.

"This is a very well-deserved honor for Gabriela," UTA coach John Sauerhage said. "She had an incredible year, and this is a fine recognition for all the hard work she put in both on and off the track."

Alfonzo, an international business major, will be a senior this fall. As a junior, she qualified for the 2015 NCAA West Preliminary Round in the 5000 meters, placing 41st. Alfonzo was the runner up at the Sun Belt Conference Championships in both the 5000m (17:16.44) and 10,000m (35:20.04). Her 10,000m time at the league meet broke a 20-year-old school record.

Earlier in the year, she smashed the school record in the 5000 meters at the Mt. SAC Relays with a clocking of 16:32.39. She was named the SBC Female Track Athlete of the Week following that performance.

USTFCCCA All-Academic honors combine academic and athletic accomplishments achieved during the 2014-15 year. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and have participated in the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
