Veterinarian Dr. Nancy Carter is celebrating five years with Arlington Animal Services. She is dedicated to saving animal lives and making Arlington safer for its people and furry friends.

Dr. Carter oversees the care of the shelter animals and works hard with staff to make sure the animals coming into, and housed at the shelter receive proper care and treatment. Veterinary Technician Stephen Anthony is her only dedicated staff. Anthony assists with incoming animals, emergencies, surgical prep and monitoring, as well as diagnostics. Together the duo see a myriad of different cases including: domestic animals, wildlife and exotics. Since Dr. Carter's arrival in July 2010, procedures and care of animals is as follows:

  • Alteration of animals > 16,242
  • Treatment of injured animals > 5,079
  • Administering of vaccines > 51,803
  • Examination of Foster Pet Program pets > 1,437

Dr. Carter is a charter member of the Board of the Ellis County SPCA, a non-profit shelter that serves Ellis County. She is Board President this year, and provides veterinary care for the 5,000 dogs and cats this shelter cares for yearly, as a volunteer provider. She also co-chairs the Shelter Medicine Committee for the state of Texas, giving a voice for Texas shelters to the Texas Veterinary Medicine Association. During the last legislative session, Dr. Carter helped represent Arlington Animal Services supporting appropriate bills that were brought forth for consideration by the Legislation.

Serving the community by educating youth is also a priority of Dr. Carter. When she is not in the shelter's Moritz Animal Wellness Center performing surgeries and tending to homeless pets, she is dedicated to instructing youth in veterinary care. She teaches hands-on classes to students aspiring to work in the veterinary field through the city's partnership with Mansfield's Ben Barber Career and Technical Academy. She appreciates the student interns that come to volunteer in the clinic, and helps them to understand all the aspects of shelter medicine.

"We are super lucky to have Dr. Carter on our team and her willing heart to make a difference in the community for the lives of pets," said shelter manager Chris Huff.

Arlington Animal Services has come a long way from the days at the prior shelter to the amazing state of the art facility now serving as a temporary home for adoptable pets. The fact we say Dr. Nancy Carter is part of our dedicated and hardworking team is a dream come true.
