The public is invited to attend the upcoming dedication of the Mansfield Independent School District' s newest campus, the Glenn Harmon Elementary School.

A dedication ceremony and public tour is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, August 21 at the school, located at 5700 Petra Drive in Arlington.

The nearly $16 million bond-funded campus is named for Glenn Mathis Harmon, who began as a fifth grade teacher in Mansfield in 1954. He would go on to become the principal of Erma Nash Elementary three years later. Harmon was then promoted to Director of Personnel two years before his retirement in 1987. After his retirement, Harmon was known to visit the school often and bring the staff red roses.

Nearly 500 students are enrolled at Glenn Harmon Elementary School for the 2016-17 school year, MISD officials said.

In 2011, voters in the MISD school district approved a $198.5 million bond package, which included funding to rebuild the district' s five oldest elementary schools.

Ponder, Boren and Rendon elementary schools have been built and construction on Anderson Elementary will begin now that Harmon Elementary is complete.
