Six high school students from Arlington will receive savings bonds and college scholarships as part of the 2006 Arlington Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

Judges have selected the winners of the MLK "Sharing the Dream" Art and Essay competitions. The winning art design will appear on T-shirts and publicity materials for the 2006 Arlington MLK Celebration. The winning essay will be read aloud during the "Sharing the Dream" Banquet, which is scheduled for January 13, at the University of Texas at Arlington.
The Arlington MLK Celebration Committee is planning this year's four-day observance to include art and drama programs, a high school step show, multicultural festival, worship service and youth concert.

The "Sharing the Dream" Banquet is the citywide kickoff event on January 13, and this year's theme ties into the national "Build the Dream" campaign for a Dr. King monument on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. This year's banquet speaker is Dr. Willie Edwards, state district director of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The fraternity is leading the national movement to raise $100 million for the monument. Groundbreaking is scheduled for the fall 2006. Sharing the Dream Banquet tickets will go on sale next month.

Organizing sponsors of the Arlington Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration include the University of Texas at Arlington, City of Arlington, Arlington Independent School District, Tarrant County College, Arlington Ministerial Association, the Star-Telegram and a number of local contributors.
