Texas State Senator

Senator Royce West is a distinguished alumnus of the UT Arlington.

He earned a Bachelor's degree in sociology in 1974. While a dedicated
college student, he was elected UT Arlington's first African American Student Congress President. He earned a Master's degree in 1979 from UT Arlington and a juris doctor from the University of Houston.
In 1993, the citizens of Dallas County elected him to the Texas Senate. During his tenure, he has been named by Texas Monthly as one of the 25 Most Powerful People in Texas Politics. The Texas Insider has named him to their “Best Legislators” list.

Senator West's key initiatives have centered around education and youth. He has worked to increase funding for at-risk youth programs, award greater compensation to victims of violent crime and establish new standards for child care.

Senator West is a long-time sponsor of the Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Leadership Program, which provides college students from Senatorial District 23 with paid employment in their respective fields of study.

He currently chairs the Senate Sub-Committee on Higher Education and is Vice Chairman of the Education Committee. He also serves as Vice Present of the Board of Directors of the Circle Ten Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Senator West is a devoted husband, father and a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.
