Proposed Lake Arlington Paddling Trail

In an effort to continue to improve recreational opportunities within our community, Parks and Recreation staff is exploring the possibility of creating a paddling trail around Lake Arlington. Many residents and visitors utilize Lake Arlington for boating, kayaking and canoeing. This proposed trail could provide a planned experience for all recreational enthusiasts to the lake.

What is a Paddling Trail?

By definition, a paddling trail is a route along a river or across other bodies of water for people using small boats, kayaks, canoes or rowboats.

Paddling trails are most often identified by the land facilities that support water travel. These include launch ramps, landing sites and other points of interest.

On land, trails have distinct surfaces or walkways; on water it's the entire water surface, a surface that is constantly changing with flow, current, boat wakes and wind.

The trail is planned to follow the perimeter of the lake with the understanding that private property will not be accessible. Kiosks on shore, along with maps and websites, will note property that will be accessible to the public. These kiosks will also remind lake visitors to stay off private property.

City staff would like to receive feedback on this proposed program from the residents bordering Lake Arlington. The Parks and Recreation Department will continue to work with other local, public and private partners to provide ongoing programs at the lake for your enjoyment.

A public meeting is being held for residents to address any questions or concerns about the proposed paddling trail. The meeting will be held at the Fire Training Center, 5501 Ron McAndrew Drive on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 6:30 pm. I have also placed a map of the proposed trail and a PowerPoint - click to view. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me at 817-459-5496 or email me at gary.packan@arlingtontx.gov.

Sincerely,

Gary Packan
