Arlington Residents Can Apply for a Free High-Efficiency Toilet
New Program Will Help Customers Conserve Water Indoors

Who: Pre-qualified Arlington residents

What: “Go With the Flow” Toilet Distribution Event

When: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25

Where: Water Utilities Department, 200 N. Cooper St.

Why: To give away 500 high-efficiency toilets to pre-qualified Arlington residents. Replacing older toilets can potentially save a family of four $90 or more a year on water and wastewater costs.

With the North Texas region’s population expected to double in the next 50 years, it is important to begin long-term planning today for a reliable supply of water in the future. It is easy to identify water saving techniques in the outdoor landscape this time of year, but indoor water usage also represents an area of significant water conservation potential.

The biggest water user in the home is the toilet, accounting for almost 30 percent of total indoor water usage, according to the Arlington Water Utilities Department. Because toilets can last for decades, some residents may still have toilets that use 3.5 to 5 gallons of water per flush. Recent technology has advanced the water efficiency effectiveness of toilets to be able to save water and achieve high performance. The toilet being provided is a WaterSense certified fixture that uses 0.8 or 1.28 gallons of water per flush. This toilet is a proven product, having been used in similar water conservation programs in San Antonio and Fort Worth, according to Conservation Program Coordinator Dustan Compton.

To pre-qualify, Arlington residents are encouraged to apply quickly because supplies are limited. The application can be completed online by going to For more information about the Arlington toilet distribution event, contact Dustan Compton at or call 817-459-6628.
