September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month
City Launches New Library Card Campaign for Teens
September is National Library Card Sign-up Month. As part of
this national event, the Arlington Public Library is leading
a library card campaign for teens who attend junior high or
high school in Arlington. The MyCard is just for teens and
provides access to free books, movies, magazines, computers
and homework help.
Atmos Energy and Time Warner Cable are campaign sponsors.
John Paris, president of Atmos Energy Mid-Tex Division, said
reading is energy for the mind and the foundation for
success.
“We believe in the youth of this community and are proud to
work in partnership with the library to encourage our
leaders of tomorrow,” he said.
The goal of the MyCard@MyLibrary campaign is to ensure that
100 percent of teens have a library card and are active
library users, according to Library Director Cary Siegfried.
There are four MyCard designs to choose from. The first
1,000 teens to use their new card will receive a free USB
bracelet.
Mayor Robert Cluck and the Arlington City Council will
officially kick off the campaign with a proclamation at 6:30
p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, in Council Chamber.
The MyCard Teen Celebration is 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at
the Levitt Pavilion located at 100 W. Abram St. Special
guests include D. J. MacHale, author of the Pendragon
series, and teen winners of the Virtual Battle of the Bands
Contest and Commercial Video Competition. While supplies
last, teens who show their cards to library staff at the
MyCard Teen Celebration will receive a free glow necklace
and T-shirt.
