Arlington’s Arbor Day Celebration and Adventure Race is Saturday, May 9

Celebrate the importance of trees with Arlington Parks and Recreation during the Naturally Fun Neighborhoods Arbor Day Event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 9. A free tree will be given to each family who attends. The location is Richard Simpson Park, 6300 W. Arkansas Lane located at Lake Arlington.

According to Urban Forestry and Land Manager Heather Dowell, shade trees around a home or business can save up to 50 percent of energy costs associated with air conditioning. During the winter months, trees can also reduce heating bills as much as 30 percent. Trees not only provide shade and moderate temperatures, they quiet the noise and improve air quality.

Arbor Day kicks off with the Third Annual Adventure Race followed by fun activities for all ages, including bounce houses, an obstacle course, environmentally friendly games and activities. Kayaking and canoeing will occur at the lake.

Arlington’s Arbor Day Adventure Race begins at 8:30 a.m. The race will include an 800-meter canoe trek, an obstacle course and a one-mile run. Life vests and canoes will be provided for each participant along with a Finisher’s Medal and gift bag to the first 100 participants. The Adventure Race is open to ages 7 and up, and the entry fee is $30 per person. Registration ends online Friday, May 8. Race day registrations will be taken onsite May 9. To participate, register by calling 817-459-5474 or online at www.active.com.

Arbor Day is part of the Parks and Recreation Department’s Naturally Fun Neighborhoods program. Arlington Passport holders can earn a stamp in their book for attending.
