Saturday, April 25, is a Day of Service for Youth
Global Youth Service Day is Saturday, April 25. More than
1,000 youth will fan out across Arlington, performing a
variety of community service projects.
After April 20, find a complete listing of service projects
on the Arlington Alliance for Youth web site at
www.arlingtonalliance4youth.com. Arlington has
registered 102 volunteer teams.
Global Youth Service Day is an international event that
mobilizes millions of youth in more than 100 countries.
According to Chairperson and lead event organizer Jim
Walther, the day of community service and volunteerism
spotlights the remarkable contributions of young people.
Schedule of Events
8 a.m. - The celebration begins with UT-Arlington’s Youth
Service Leadership Recognition Breakfast for nominees of the
Sheris Growe Youth Leader of the Year Award. State
Representative Diane Patrick will be the keynote speaker.
The location is the UT-Arlington College of Business, Room
245.
Service projects begin.
3:30 p.m. – With service projects complete, youth groups
will gather at the new Founders Plaza in downtown Arlington
for food, entertainment and a closing awards ceremony. A
coalition leader and one youth from each team will share the
highlights of their service project in videotaped
interviews.
About the Arlington Alliance for Youth
The Arlington Alliance for Youth is a lead agency for Global
Youth Service Day in Arlington. Originally organized by the
city’s five Kiwanis Clubs, leadership now represents the
City of Arlington, the Arlington Independent School
District, the City of Pantego, the University of Texas at
Arlington, the Arlington Chamber of Commerce, youth groups
in the city, faith-based youth groups, the Arlington Kiwanis
Clubs, the Rotary Club, the Optimist Club and the Lions
Clubs. Presenting sponsors include the State Farm Companies
Foundation, First Rate Corporation and the Star-Telegram.
The Arlington Chamber of Commerce Foundation provided a $100
grant to each coalition and $100 grants to each team to help
defray the cost of materials and supplies for the event.
