Public Works Turns Out the Lights on Green Oaks Boulevard
60-Day Pilot Program to Measure Energy Savings

Beginning this week, the Public Works and Transportation Department will turn off every other streetlight along Green Oaks Boulevard from Collins Street to Matlock Road in south Arlington.

In an effort to save money and energy, and to reduce light pollution, the City of Arlington is launching this pilot program to determine potential cost savings associated with streetlights.

Select lights should all be turned off before the end of this week, according to Public Works and Transportation Director Bob Lowry.

“This pilot program is scheduled to last approximately 60 days,” Lowry said. “It will provide input to model the light levels along the street, as well as the dollar and energy savings. The model will be used to determine if streetlight design standards require modification.”

If the pilot program is successful and implemented citywide, annual savings could be as much as $500,000.
