A Call for Entries
City Launches Annual Animal Essay Contest
The annual competition that inspires students to write essays about
topics relating to responsible pet ownership is now under way. Now
in its eighth year, the Arlington Animal Essay Contest is open to
all students in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 who reside within the city
limits of Arlington. The entry deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23.
Last year, the contest drew 547 entries. The top three winners in
each grade level receive U.S. Savings Bonds. First-place winners are
awarded $500, second-place winners $350, and third-place winners
$150.
Winners will be formally recognized at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March
10, during the Regular Meeting of the Arlington City Council in the
Council Chamber.
Essays must not exceed 500 words. Submissions will be judged on
the elements of effective writing and must be written on the topic
assigned by grade level:
Grade 3 Essay Topic: If animals could talk, what would they
say?
Grade 4 Essay Topic: What feelings do you think animals have?
Grade 5 Essay Topic: What are some ways that you can make life
better for animals in your community?
Grade 6 Essay Topic: How do animals benefit us in our daily
lives?
This year’s contest is sponsored by the City of Arlington
Community Services Department/Animal Services Division and District
2 City Council member Sheri Capehart in partnership with Time Warner
Communications and the Star-Telegram.
