PRESS RELEASES - NOVEMBER 2008
November 7, 2008
Groundbreaking is Nov. 8 for The Village at Sports Center
Sports-Themed Plaza & Mixed-Use Development Offers Dining, Shopping
and More
Venice comes to Arlington. The City of Arlington will break
ground on The Village at Sports Center at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8,
at the Harold Patterson Sports Center located at 1000 W. Bardin Road
at the northeast corner of Cooper Street and Wimbledon Drive in
south Arlington. Saturday’s program includes Arlington Mayor Robert
Cluck, Developer Mojy Haddad of the Oakhollow Group, Council Member
Sheri Capehart and Park Board Chair Lynn Healy.
This sports-themed plaza/mixed-use development features retail
shopping, casual dining, outdoor sporting areas and offices. This
mixed-use development is being built on land the City of Arlington,
in a public referendum, agreed to sell to the Oakhollow Group.
The project, designed by CHS Architects, is different from most
mixed-use projects.
“I travel to Europe frequently and admire the ancient
architecture of Europe, in particular, Italy, which inspires me in
most of my design work,” said Haddad, who is president of the
Oakhollow Group. “The Mediterranean/Venetian style design and
architecture of the project with arches, cupolas, towers, various
colors and materials in storefronts including stucco, stone and
brick, as well as large plazas, fountains, outdoor seating areas,
trellises, sculptures and sidewalk cafes will create a unique
European feel and experience here at home that you haven’t seen
before in Arlington.”
The development will have a strong pedestrian-oriented connection
to the Sports Center via an outdoor plaza. The Harold Patterson
Sports Center annually hosts more than 729,000 visitors and players.
