Housing Authority Earns Award of Excellence
The City of Arlington Housing Authority has earned an Award of
Excellence in Administration Innovation from the National
Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials. The award was
presented Oct. 28 during the NAHRO conference in San Antonio. The
Housing Rehabilitation Program helps improve the safety and
livability of homes.
“Through the Housing Rehab Program, we are helping to preserve
affordable housing and stabilize Arlington’s neighborhoods,” said
Lee Hitchcock, director of Community Services.
According to David Zappasodi, Director of the Housing Authority,
an increasing number of elderly and disabled homeowners are unable
to maintain the homes they have lived in for many years. After years
of deferred maintenance, homes can become substandard and unsafe.
The Housing Rehabilitation Program provides loans up to $24,500 per
household to help Arlington homeowners make essential repairs.
Funding may also be used to improve the accessibility of homes for
persons with disabilities. The loans are forgiven if the homeowner
remains in the home for five years.
To be eligible for assistance, applicants must be residents of
Arlington and meet HUD low-income limits. Currently, the maximum
income limit for a family of four is $50,700. Priority is given to
Arlington homeowners who are elderly or disabled.
The Arlington Housing Authority manages and operates the Housing
Rehabilitation Program with Community Development Block Grant funds
and HOME Investment Partnership Program funding provided through the
City of Arlington. In fiscal year 2008, the City of Arlington
provided $1.4 million in CDBG and HOME funding to the Housing
Authority for the rehabilitation program.
