Arlington Wins National PR News Award for Clean Air Campaign

WHO: City of Arlington

WHAT: Received PR News Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Award in the Green PR Campaign category for the 2007 Clean Air Campaign. PR News is a leading publication covering the public relations trade.

WHEN: March 19

WHERE: Awards luncheon at the National Press Club, Washington, DC

WHY: PR News CSR Awards recognize individuals and companies that successfully demonstrate that altruism, philanthropy and employee commitment can go a long way towards making an impact on a community, key stakeholders, and a company’s bottom line.

Background
The City of Arlington’s garbage collection company, Republic Waste Services Inc, donated $100,000 for a public education campaign about air quality issues. With these funds, a public awareness campaign, entitled “What is your clean air IQ” was developed and implemented in the summer of 2006. Materials were created that included brochures in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese, air quality tester kits, clean air website, brochure stands, newspaper and radio advertisements.

About the 2007 Campaign
The strategy for the 2007 Clean Air Campaign was to use the remaining funds from the 2006 campaign to reach as many citizens as possible. A partnership with the Parks at Arlington Mall was established with the goal of reaching their average of 5,280,000 visitors during the campaign period, August-October. This partnership allowed the city to reach a large citizen base and the mall to fulfill their 2007 Green Initiative objective. Mall advertising materials were produced using the remaining campaign funds and the mall provided in-kind advertising space valued at $95,510. During the 2007 campaign period, on line requests for clean air tester kits went from 65 in 2006 to 679 in 2007. Website hits increased 1900%, from 165 in 2006 to 3,126 in 2007.
