Construction to Begin on $4.7 Million Founders’ Plaza and Levitt Pavilion
Ground Breaking Ceremony is 9 a.m. Thursday in Downtown Arlington

Who: City of Arlington, Parks and Recreation Department and Friends of the Levitt Pavilion

What: Groundbreaking ceremony for Founders’ Plaza and the Levitt Pavilion for the Performing Arts

When: 9 a.m. Thursday, March 6, 2008

Where: 100 W. Abram St. in downtown Arlington (Across from City Hall)

Why: To celebrate the construction of Founders’ Plaza and Levitt Pavilion

Background
The vision for Founders Plaza is to create a central gathering place for community celebrations. The goal is to provide 50 free concerts annually that celebrate diversity, enrich family values and enhance community spirit through a shared appreciation of the performing arts. The Levitt Pavilion, an outdoor amphitheater, will serve as the focal point.

Thursday’s ground breaking will include Mayor Robert Cluck, members of the Arlington City Council, Friends of the Levitt Pavilion, City of Arlington, and philanthropic leaders.

The Mortimer Levitt Foundation has provided $250,000 in capital funds towards the construction of the pavilion and committed to five years of additional funds for programming at $250,000 per year. The foundation, based in New York, exists to provide funding to communities around the country that share the vision of providing free concerts under the stars.

Friends of the Levitt Pavilion conducted a capital fundraising campaign, raising $1.2 million to complete funds necessary to achieve the goal of presenting the first free concert series in the fall 2008. The Arlington Tomorrow Foundation awarded the project a $100,000 grant. Other funding sources include the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Community Development Block Grant program and park fees.
