Registration is Open for the 2008 Neighborhood Academy
Applications are being accepted through Friday, Jan. 4 for the
2008 Arlington Neighborhood Academy. The six-week course offers
educational and leadership opportunities for residents, neighborhood
groups and community leaders. The focus is on city government,
partnerships, community building and civic engagement.
Two-hour evening sessions will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17.
Classes will be held on consecutive Thursdays in the Council
Briefing Room located on the Third Floor of City Hall at 101 W.
Abram St.
The academy concludes on Thursday, March 27. The city’s goal is
for 92 Arlington residents to graduate in 2008. Enrollment is free.
Last year, the academy had 62 graduates.
“The Arlington Neighborhood Academy is helping to create an informed
and knowledgeable citizenry who are able to engage skillfully and
actively participate in the governmental process and reinvigorate
their neighborhood,” said Neighborhood Coordinator RJ Blair. “It’s a
great way to help the city build capacity.”
About the Academy
The Arlington Neighborhood Academy is a six-week series. There
are three tracts. The Basic Tract “Accessing City Services I & II”
begins Thursday, Jan. 17. The Leadership Tract “Neighborhood
Preservation,” begins Thursday, February 14. The Youth Tract
“Neighborhood Youth Leadership” is especially for Arlington
residents age 14-17 and starts Thursday, March 13. All sessions are
held in the Council Briefing Room at City Hall.
The program concludes on March 27. The Neighborhood Academy
graduation and community-wide celebrations are planned for June
during Neighborhood Month.
