Arlington is Recognized Nationally for Innovation in Managing Housing Programs

Who: The Arlington Housing Authority

What: Received the Champion in Housing Award from Nan McKay and Associates, a national consulting firm to HUD and the affordable housing industry.

When: October 15, 2007

Why: For innovation in the management and operation of Arlington housing programs.

Background

The Arlington Housing Authority has implemented a web-based application process to increase its efficiency and improve accessibility for applicants seeking housing assistance. Using a computer and the Internet, applicants can apply for housing assistance from home, work or at any Arlington Public Library, 24 hours a day. A computer kiosk is also available for use in the AHA central office at 501 W. Sanford, Suite 20. The AHA has received over 15,000 applications after a five-year hiatus.

The AHA, in collaboration with JP Morgan Chase Bank, also utilizes Pay Card, an electronic payment process to improve customer service and reduce operating costs. The Pay Card allows eligible program participants to receive monthly supplemental funds, improving convenience and saving participants check cashing fees. The AHA is the first housing authority in the country to implement this program.

About the Arlington Housing Authority

The AHA is governed by a Board of Commissioners appointed by the Arlington City Council. It is affiliated with the City through an inter-local cooperative agreement. Their mission is to advocate for and pursue affordable housing opportunities for low income persons in Arlington.
“This award reflects Executive Director David Zappasodi's innovative leadership and AHA staff's heartfelt commitment to our clients,” said Community Services Director Lee Hitchcock. “The result is superior service to our community and citizens.”
