New Animal Center is Scheduled to Open in the Spring 2008
Ground Breaking Ceremony is Friday, May 18
A ground breaking ceremony for the new Animal Services Center is
planned for 10 a.m. Friday, May 18 in Arlington. The address is 1000
S.E. Green Oaks Blvd., adjacent to the Southeast Branch Library and
south of Interstate 20. Friday’s program includes Arlington Mayor
Robert Cluck, District 3 City Council member Robert Rivera, District
2 City Council member Sheri Capehart and members of the Animal
Services Advisory Board. When the new Animal Services Center opens
in Spring 2008, it will feature new canine kennels, feline cages,
and a Wellness Clinic, which will provide spaying and neutering
services for adopted animals. The 19,950 square-foot center will
also have an Animal Training Room and four Meet/Greet Get Acquainted
Rooms.
Environmental “green” design elements in this project include
drought resistant, Texas Smartscape landscaping. Other green
features include energy efficient roofing, wall insulation and sky
lights with special window and entrance enhancements for better
temperature control.
The Animal Services Center will be located adjacent to the planned
dog park, the Southeast Branch Library and Fish Creek Linear Park.
The city’s first dog park is scheduled to open later this summer.
The health and safety mission of the Community Services
Department/Animal Services Division includes the eradication of
rabies and the successful placement of stray and unwanted animals
within the community. The Animal Services Center is funded by
bonds approved by voters in 2003 and private funding contributions
from community partnerships. Please note: Animal Services staff
are scheduled to participate in Friday’s ground breaking ceremony.
The Animal Services Center at 5920 W. Pioneer Parkway will close
temporarily from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Arlington residents requesting
field response to emergency calls for service are asked to call
9-1-1 and an Animal Services Officer will be dispatched.
