Arlington and Grand Prairie to Host Fish Creek Trail Dedication
‘Trail of Two Cities’ Opens February 20

February 16, 2007

Celebrating their first city-to-city trail connection, the cities of Arlington and Grand Prairie will hold a dedication ceremony for the Fish Creek Trail on Feb. 20.

Beginning at 10 a.m., both cities will officially celebrate the trail’s opening. The ceremony will occur at the trail connection point at the Grand Prairie/Arlington city line, which is located west of State Highway 360 near Green Oaks Boulevard. Arlington guests and participants are asked to park along Portland Drive. To get there: Exit State Highway 360 at Green Oaks Boulevard, stay on service road and proceed right on Portland Drive. The site is a short walking distance from Portland Drive.

Tuesday’s program will include the mayors of Arlington and Grand Prairie and their city council and park board members.

The trail provides residents of both cities access to more than seven miles of continuous concrete trail. Marking the connection is a medallion featuring Arlington and Grand Prairie city logos embedded under a metal archway.

Arlington’s section of Fish Creek Trail runs from the city line west to Silo Road where it connects to Cravens Park trail, ending at the corner of Matlock Road and Cravens Park Drive. Grand Prairie’s trail section stretches from the city line east to Matthew Road.

“We’re excited about this collaboration and hope it is the first of several trails that will connect our two great cities,” said Arlington Parks and Recreation Director Pete Jamieson.
Grand Prairie officials say the trail can eventually extend to Dallas. The popularity of Fish Creek has continued to increase since the first phase opened in the mid 1980s. According to city surveys, Fish Creek’s hike and bike trails are the most requested park amenity in Grand Prairie. Arlington’s section of the trail ends in Cravens Park, which is 78 acres of walking trails, baseball fields and other recreational amenities.
