City Registers Record High Attendance in Summer Aquatics Program
A Busy Swim Season Draws to a Close as New School Year Begins
July 21, 2006
The Arlington Parks and Recreation Department saw record attendance
in its summer aquatics program this year, following several months
of hot, dry temperatures and the grand opening of a new family
aquatic center in south Arlington.
As the summer draws to a close and a new school year begins,
weekday operations will change at four outdoor municipal pools.
Beginning Saturday, July 29, the Allen Bolden Pool, Helen Wessler
Play Pool, Howard Moore Play Pool and Woodland West Pool will
maintain Saturday and Sunday swim hours only through August 13. The
first day of class for students returning to Arlington area schools
is August 14.
According to Parks officials, two family aquatic centers will
continue weekday and weekend hours through August 13. The Randol
Mill Family Aquatic Center and Bad Königshofen Family Aquatic Center
will continue to remain open Saturdays and Sundays through September
4. On Labor Day, September 4, these pools will open at 1 p.m. and
close at 6 p.m.
A Record-Setting Summer Aquatic Program
Attendance at municipal pools has surpassed the 100,000 mark for the
first time ever, according to Arlington Parks and Recreation
officials. To date, attendance is at 101,714. Last summer’s
attendance at municipal outdoor pools was 77,511 compared with
66,432 in 2004. Revenue projections are also up. To date, revenue
generated from municipal outdoor pools is at $375,003 compared with
$292,176 collected last summer.
“The new Bad Königshofen Family Aquatic Center in Stovall Park has
been wonderfully received and became one of our most popular
attractions this summer,” said Aquatics Program Manager Kim Lange.
According to data compiled by the department this week, 1,577
children and adults completed swim instruction classes this summer
compared to 1,215 in 2005 and 1,198 in 2004. The number of season
swim passes purchased this year more than doubled from last summer.
This summer, 2,879 swim passes were purchased compared with 1,120
purchased in the summer of 2005. Season swim passes provide
unlimited access to municipal swimming pools and aquatic centers.
