PRESS RELEASES - JULY 2006
Arlington Smart Yard Contest 2006 is Under Way
Entry Deadline is September 29
July 7, 2006
This week, the City of Arlington announced the start of the 2006
Smart Yard Contest. The contest recognizes Arlington residents who
use environmentally-friendly yard design and care concepts which are
considered smart for north Texas’ hot summer climate. The entry
deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, September 29.
Because more Arlington residents are establishing and maintaining
water efficient landscapes during the summer months, this year’s
contest includes a new category that recognizes water conservation
and the best use of rain water and irrigation, according to Project
Coordinator Roni Crotty.
The annual contest supports the principles of the Texas
Smartscape program created to help North Texas area consumers select
and care for drought tolerant landscapes that require minimal water,
fertilizers and pesticides.
In addition to the water conservation category, four other
categories recognize the best use of mulch and compost, ground
cover, vines, wildflowers and shade tolerant plants. There is also a
category that recognizes landscapes that value wildlife with
creative bird, critter and butterfly friendly design concepts. For a
complete list of categories, visit the
Environmental Services Department web page. The list of
categories is also attached. Smart Yard Contest winners from 2005
can be viewed on the city’s website.
This year’s winners will be selected by a panel of judges and
recognized with yard signage declaring their winning landscape a
“Smart Yard” later this fall. This program is sponsored by the City
of Arlington Environmental Services Department in partnership with
UT-Arlington Environmental Health Department.
