The George W. Hawkes Central Library in downtown
Arlington will be closed from 6 p.m. Monday, April 17 through Friday,
April 21 for construction and remodeling work. The library is
scheduled to reopen to the public at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 22.
Renovations include floor and lighting improvements in
the foyer and new customer service desks. The book drop is being
upgraded, Quick Check machines are being installed, and the children’s
area is being redesigned and expanded. These improvements are
scheduled to be completed by late May 2006.
Because of the improvements, the book drop located
outside of the Central Library remains closed through late April.
During regular library hours, books should be returned inside of the
library. After business hours, items for the Central Library may be
returned at any branch library book drop.
Central Services Administrator Starr Krottinger said
library staff are eagerly awaiting the arrival of a new welcoming
environment and opportunities to serve customers more efficiently.
"We continue to ask for your patience as we work
through these improvements," Krottinger said.
