Arlington City Manager Jim Holgersson announced
today the appointment of Arlington Police Chief Theron Bowman as
interim Deputy City Manager for Neighborhood Services. The interim
assignment provides the opportunity to move forward with building
stronger and safer neighborhoods.
"Chief Bowman brings extensive management and
community knowledge that will help build a stronger neighborhood
team," Holgersson said in announcing the appointment. "He has built
collaborative relationships as part of the community policing effort
and continues to strive toward developing safer neighborhoods."
The Neighborhood Services Team is comprised of five
departments; Police, Fire, Libraries, Parks & Recreation, and
Community Services. It represents the bulk of city services delivered
to neighborhoods.
"I am excited about playing a key role in
developing Arlington’s future as a great place to live, work, and
play," Bowman said. "I look forward to this assignment."
Bowman began his law enforcement career with the
Arlington Police Department in 1983. He has held a number of
supervisory and command positions before assuming the duties of Police
Chief in March 1999. Chief Bowman has a Bachelor's Degree in Biology,
a Master's Degree in Public Administration, and a Ph.D. in Urban and
Public Administration. He has been recognized locally and nationally
for his leadership and was recognized in 2004 by the Police Executive
Research Forum with the Gary P. Hayes Award.
A national search to identify a permanent Deputy
City Manager for Neighborhood Services has been initiated and is
scheduled to be completed within four to six months.
