City Announces Winners of the 2006 Animal Essay Contest
Recognition Ceremony is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 28

The Mayor and Arlington City Council will present
the winners of the Fifth Annual Animal Essay Contest during a special
recognition ceremony on February 28.
Student winners will be recognized at 6:30 p.m.,
Tuesday, February 28, in the Council Chamber at 101 W. Abram St. A
reception for the winners will occur at 6 p.m. in the City Hall Lobby,
just prior to the recognition ceremony.
The Animal Essay Contest was open to elementary
students in grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 who reside within Arlington’s city
limits. Students were asked to share their ideas for responsible pet
ownership. This year’s contest drew a record 1,167 essay entries, up
from 733 in the last essay contest.
The panel of judges included members of the City of
Arlington Animal Services Center Advisory Board and school board
members from Arlington, Mansfield, and Kennedale independent school
districts. The contest was sponsored by the City of Arlington
Neighborhood Services Department - Animal Services Division, Arlington
City Council Member Sheri Capehart, Comcast and the Star-Telegram.
The top three winners in each grade level will
receive U.S. Savings Bonds. First place winners will receive $500
savings bond, second place winners will receive $350 savings bond and
third place winners will receive $150 savings bond.
