Crime mapping helps the Arlington Police Department
identify hot spots for criminal activity. The Neighborhood Services
Department uses geographic information systems technology or GIS to
efficiently track and respond to neighborhood code violations,
reducing time and resources.
These are two of many ways that GIS technology is
improving the delivery of municipal government programs and services.
The City of Arlington will showcase this technology during GIS Day on
Wednesday, November 16, at the Arlington Convention Center, 1200
Ballpark Way. The event is open to the public and begins at 10 a.m.
Demonstrations are scheduled to occur throughout the day until 4 p.m.
GIS technology is computer-based mapping tools that
visually present data about a specific geographic area. Maps that show
parcel and street information for the entire city are created and
maintained by the City’s Information Technology Department and
Geoprocessing Division. Geographic details such as buildings, water
features and terrain are added as visual layers. Incident reports can
be added to the maps to illustrate trends.
GIS Day Coordinator Rita Rodriguez said the City of
Arlington is especially proud to have proclamations this year from
Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck and Governor Rick Perry. GIS Day is a
global celebration that is raising awareness about geographic
information technology. Schools and businesses are invited. Door
prizes and refreshments will be available.
