Tennis Center to Host Pro Event Beginning October 15 Contact
Cheryel Carpenter Plano High School Junior Daniel Hwang earned a wildcard into the Main Draw of the Texas 76ers Pro Event after winning the Wildcard Tournament last weekend at the Arlington Tennis Center. Hwang finished No. 1 in Texas and No. 11 in the country. In the finals, he defeated Karl Sloss, a teaching pro from Denver, Colo. Sloss is a former player for the University of Hawaii and won the wildcard for the qualifying draw. The Texas 76ers, a community tennis association member of the Texas Section of the United States Tennis Association, is the organizing body of the upcoming Pro Event. The qualifying round will begin Saturday, October 15 at the Arlington Tennis Center. The Main Draw is scheduled to start Monday, October 17 with the Finals to be played Sunday, October 23. Singles and doubles match play occurs every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free and concessions will be available for purchase. "This is a very prestigious event," said Tennis Center Director Laura Gilbert. Participants are competing for $15,000 in cash prizes while trying to advance to the Challenger Circuit and the U.S. Open. Event sponsors include the United States Tennis Association, Whitten Inn, Arlington Tennis Association, Oncourt Offcourt, Medical Center of Arlington, David DeVries, Remax Pinnacle Group and Wilson.
