A ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the completion of a new community-built playground at J.W. Dunlop Sports Center will occur at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 8. The sports center and playground are located at 1500 Northwest Green Oaks Blvd. in north Arlington.

From September through October 2005, more than 1,000 volunteers donated their time to build the new creative playground. Community volunteers were led by three consultants from Leather and Associates, the community-build playground company that built the original equipment at J.W. Dunlop Sports Center. The company has more than 30 years of experience in building playgrounds.

The project was funded by $100,000 from the 1997 Parks Bond Program and $100,000 in matching funds raised by the Sunrise Rotary Club of Arlington.

The new playground covers 10,000 square feet and has slides, bridges, ramps and towers in various shapes including rockets, climbing walls and forts.
