On August 15, more than 6,000 Arlington area youth will be returning to class. While the Arlington Police Department is reminding motorists about the importance of safe travel in school zones, some communities are helping to ensure that families have the essential supplies for a good start in the new school year.

A Back to School Bash on Thursday, Aug. 11 is an example of how one Arlington business owner is leading efforts to help youths get a good start to the new school year. Starz Barbershop at 3751 Matlock Road is providing free hair cuts from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Back packs and school supplies will also be distributed. More than 200 select youths from the Arlington Big Brothers Big Sisters are scheduled to participate. Starz Barbershop owner is Don Giles. District 3 City Council member Robert Rivera said something as basic as a good haircut can help build confidence in a child.

"Families are the foundations of our community," said Rivera who is helping to organize the event. "When we do something to help a child perform better in school, we are building a better future for our community."

Event Chairman Geoffrey Mitchell said the barbershop sees value in education. The event is being sponsored by volunteers from the business, religious and political communities. Sponsors include State Representative Bill Zedler, Arlington Independent School Board Trustee Wayne Ogle, Constable Clint Burgess, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Arlington, Webb Baptist Church, Ownby Consulting, Arlington Police Association and a growing number of other groups and organizations.

Reminder: When School Zone Lights are Flashing …

  • Slow Down. All vehicles should travel at or below 20 mph.
  • Focus on driving. Avoid distractions (cellular phone, radio and makeup).
  • If approached by an emergency vehicle, slow to 5 mph.

Remember: It is illegal to pass a school bus when it is picking up or dropping off students.
