The City of Arlington Information Technology Department has earned the 2005 Technology Excellence Award. The award was presented last by the Texas Association of Governmental Information Technology Managers during their annual conference in Corpus Christi.

The Technology Excellence Award recognizes the success of the City’s Unified Citywide Network, which is capable of providing data, voice and video services to municipal buildings and facilities. Applications running on the network include management of the city’s traffic signals, video surveillance, public safety radio traffic from the primary dispatch center to the city’s radio towers, wireless access to the Internet, phone service, and basic network file and print services. Future applications to be hosted on the network include an expanded door access control system for city facilities, a wireless system for public safety personnel, Voice Over IP phones, and support for mobile devices utilized by city building inspectors.

According to Chief Information Officer Tim Barbee, the award recognizes the positive direction the city is going with technology. The network enhances service delivery, Barbee said.

The Texas Association of Governmental Information Technology Managers is a not-for-profit organization that provides information system professionals a forum for generating ideas, sharing problems and developing solutions. Since 1978, TAGITM has helped cities, counties and appraisal districts within Texas to realize the full potential of automation benefits.
