City Continues Efforts to Negotiate Mutual Agreements with Property Owners
by Cheryel Carpenter At their June 28 meeting, the Arlington City Council will continue to discuss property acquisition associated with the construction of the Cowboy Stadium Project, in east Arlington. The Council is attempting to acquire the land in a timely fashion to maintain the momentum of the project, on which construction is expected to begin next year. The City’s objective is to acquire the properties through negotiations with their owners, and these negotiations are expected to be ongoing. At their regular meeting, which begins at 6:30 p.m., the City Council is scheduled to approve contracts of sale for as many as nine, additional residential properties in the impacted area of the new stadium. The City Council is also scheduled to authorize eminent domain proceedings. Eminent domain authorizes the City to acquire property for a public purpose for fair market value and other related relocation costs. Negotiations will continue in hopes of avoiding eminent domain, according to Real Estate Manager Roger Venables. In the case of successful negotiations, residential property owners will receive $22,500 for relocation, and renters will receive $5,250. "While we are given the authority under state law to start eminent domain proceedings, efforts to negotiate mutual agreements with property owners continue to be made," Venables said.
