Free Reading Tutorials at Two Arlington Public Libraries
by Cheryel Carpenter The Arlington Public Library and H.O.P.E. Tutoring Center have partnered to help students keep up their reading skills this summer. Reading Rocks is a free reading tutorial program available for students who will be entering grades four through eight when the new school year begins this fall. Student participants will receive one-on-one tutoring and improve their reading skills using books, magazines, games and other educational resources at the library. At the first session, parents and guardians are asked to provide a copy of their child’s last report card and financial information such as a copy of an AISD free or reduced lunch letter or a recent paycheck stub. H.O.P.E. uses this information to track performance and participation. "Regardless of income level, if a child is having difficulty reading, we are here this summer to help," said Area Branch Manager Rachel Orozco. H.O.P.E. is an acronym for Helping Our Pupils Excel. It is a nonprofit, community-wide organization that provides free tutoring during the school year to students enrolled in public, private and parochial schools.
