The Arlington Public Library has been recognized by the North Texas Regional Library System for community service excellence. During a luncheon on May 26 in Fort Worth, the Arlington Public Library System received awards in Leadership, Project Development and Youth Volunteerism.

The Library Leadership Award was presented to William W. Lace, who currently serves as the chair of the Arlington Public Library Foundation. Over the past 12 years, Lace has been relentless in his efforts to see the library system grow. He began his work with the library as a volunteer on a committee that led the citizen campaign for the 1992 bond election that secured $8,765,000 for new construction, renovation, and educational materials. In 1993 Lace was appointed to the Library Advisory Board and served as board chair from 1996 to 2000. In 2000 he joined the Arlington Public Library Foundation board where he has served as chair since 2002.

The Project Award was presented to El dia de los ninos/El dia de los libros. This cultural celebration was held in May 2004 at the Northeast Branch Library and showcased the many cultures residing within Arlington. Library patrons enjoyed performances and had an opportunity to travel around the world by visiting tables representing different countries: Mexico, China, Africa, Vietnam, Morocco, Russia and the Middle East. At each table, library patrons received a passport stamp, completed a craft, and learned how to write their name in different languages.

The Youth Library Volunteer Award was presented to Kristen and Jonathan Wilson of Arlington. Since June 2003, the Wilson teens have volunteered in the Arlington Public Library’s Computer Training Center. Kristen, who is age 17, has worked 420 hours in 140 computer training classes. Jonathan, who is age 16, has worked 450 hours in 50 computer classes.
