Summer Reading Program Is Under way at Arlington Public Libraries

A popular reading club tradition for people of all ages continues this summer at public libraries in Arlington. The Summer Reading Club continues through July 29 and includes free programs, special events and prizes for children, teens and adults. Last summer, participants read 33,551 books.

Summer Reading Clubs for Children Theme: "Go Wild … Read"

The Listeners Club is designed for infants up to first grade. Listen to 20 books or more and earn a certificate. The Readers Club is for children in grades one to six. Log 10 hours or more of reading and receive a free book and certificate. Enter names in drawings for prizes.

On Sunday, July 24, the Arlington Public Library and Texas Rangers will host Library Day at Ameriquest Field in Arlington for participants of the Summer Reading Club for Children. Free tickets will be awarded to children when they turn in reading logs by July 7. Family discount tickets will also be available. Game time is 1:05 p.m. on July 24. The Texas Rangers will play the Oakland Athletics. Prior to game time, readers and listeners will have an opportunity to parade around the field.

The Children’s Summer Reading Club ends July 30 with free ice skating at Ice at the Parks in the Parks at Arlington Mall from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. for participants who have turned in reading logs by July 23. A $2 skate rental fee will be charged.

Children’s Summer Reading Club community partners include the Friends of the Arlington Public Library, National Semiconductor, Ice at the Parks, Six Flags Over Texas, Texas Rangers and the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.

Clowning Around at the Library will celebrate summer with wild and crazy fun for children ages 5 through 12.

Critterman, Dave Kleven, will bring an assortment of live animals for children 5 through 12.

  • 2:30 p.m. Monday, June 13 at the Northeast Branch Library. The Lewis and Clark Discovery Program will focus on animals like beavers and prairie dogs that the famous explorers met on their travels.
  • 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 29 at the Woodland West Branch Library. The Rainforest Jewels program presents exotic animals such as lemurs and kinkajous from the exotic rainforests of the world.

Dan Gibson, Banjo-playing Storyteller will pick his banjo and weave pictures with his voice, while captivating everyone within hearing distance. The program is for ages 5 through 12.

Drum Guy – Feel the Beat! Eric Stuer can get rhythm from drums, coffee cans, water bottles, even plastic tubes! His rousing program for children ages 6 through 12 will have everyone in the audience clapping and drumming along.

Frog Prince Puppet Show, 2:30 p.m. at the Northeast Branch Library. Sandy and Friends Storytelling with Puppetry presents a hilarious version of the fairy tale about a frog and a princess, for ages 4 through 12.

George the Magician will wave his magic wand and make frowns disappear into thin air and giggles pop out of children’s mouths. The program is for children ages 4 through 12.

Melody Bell, 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 15 at the Woodland West Branch Library. Adults and children ages 5 through 12 will get caught up in stories and songs and wonderful rhythms.

On the Wing Again Members of Wild Birds Unlimited, a non-profit organization dedicated to caring for injured and orphaned wild birds, will bring live owls and hawks with them, while they share their knowledge of birds and their importance. The program is for children ages 5 through 12.

Outback Ben’s Wild Reading Review, 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 28 at the Lake Arlington Branch Library. Children ages 5 through 12 will enjoy fun from Down Under with this entertaining mix of magic tricks and puppetry.

Piracy 101 or School for Scalawags, 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 8 at the Woodland West Branch Library. Professor Cole will teach kids ages 5 through 12 rollicking lessons about becoming not-so-scary pirates. The puppets, comedy and magic will have everyone rolling on the deck.

Texas Jack and the Pinto Bean Stalk, 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 28 at the East Arlington Branch Library. Sandy and Friends Storytelling with Puppetry offer a wild new Texas-style version of this old favorite for children ages 4 through 12.

Wayland’s Wonderful Wizard School, 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 24 at the George W. Hawkes Central Library. Wayland’s combination of humor and magic will keep everyone in the audience spellbound. The program is for kids ages 5 through 12.

Wild About Reading with Masai Maggie Maggie’s puppet friends will help her read a book and engage in lots of silly mischief with children ages 3 through 10.

Summer Reading Club for Teens – Theme: "Get Wild @ Your Library"

The Teen Summer Reading Club is for teens entering grades seven through twelve. Complete a reading log for every five hours spent reading. Anything goes, as long as it contains words – books, magazines, newspapers and web pages. Every completed log earns a small prize (as long as supplies last) and an entry for the prize drawing. The prize drawing will include a variety of prizes. (Limit one per participant.) Winners will be notified by telephone after August 10.

Summer Reading Club for Adults – Theme: "Take a Walk on the Wild Side"

The Adult Summer Reading Club is for readers age 18 and older. Your first completed log earns a small gift, and every log earns an entry for the final prize drawing. Increase the number of your entries with every log you return.  All entries must be received by July 23. The final prize drawing may include gift certificates to local restaurants and bookstores (limit one per participant.)  Winners will be notified after August 10.
