At 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, Arlington city officials will initiate the
redevelopment of High Oak Terrace by observing the demolition of four
substandard apartment buildings. A total of 131 apartment units are planned
for demolition.
The apartment complex and adjoining property was purchased after the
Arlington City Council authorized the use of $2.6 million in Community
Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnership funds for
acquisition, asbestos removal and demolition.
Once the property has been cleared, the Arlington Housing Finance
Corporation will release a request for proposal for the private development
of new, owner-occupied, single-family homes and/or town home units to be
built on the site. Arlington city officials say the redevelopment of the
12-acre site will enhance the quality of life for the city and its
residents.
"This is just the beginning of the redevelopment and revitalization of
aging, run-down apartments,” said District 4 City Council Member Kathryn
Wilemon, who represents this area of Arlington. “We realize that our ratio
of apartment to single family homes is out of balance. Today we are taking
the first step to change that balance. This is a win-win situation for our
neighborhood and our city."
