Arlington Residents Took the Fitness Challenge and Won!

Seven fitness conscious Arlington residents have been declared winners of the first Mayor’s Fitness Challenge. Each winner exceeded the five day total of 68,653 steps taken by Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck when he challenged Fort Worth Mayor Mike Moncrief to a step off earlier this summer.

The Mayor’s Fitness Challenge began October 2 with a health and fitness fair at the Elzie Odom Recreation Center. For five days following the event, Arlington residents were challenged to lead more active lifestyles and out-step the mayor.

The following winners will be formally recognized by the mayor and Arlington City Council in January:

Richard Weber - 90,509 steps

Dennis Zunker - 77,000 steps

Sonya Gotch - 76,356 steps

Lynda Freeman - 73,356 steps

Doreen Bruner - 72,408 steps

Betty Williams - 71,515 steps

Honorable Mention - Colleen Weber (age 11) - 55,537 steps

The top two winners will receive a free annual recreation facility-use card and one month of free fitness at any city recreation center. The prizes were sponsored by the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department.

Mayor Cluck, a physician, reminds Arlington residents that physical fitness is the most important factor in a long and healthy life. He encourages every one to take at least 10,000 steps a day for better health. Join the movement. For more information about health and fitness, go to www.texasroundup.org.
