City of Arlington Facilities Experience Telephone Outage

Several City of Arlington facilities were without telephone service Wednesday due to an equipment malfunction that routes calls to offices along Main Street. Ott Cribbs, Parks & Recreation and several other offices on the remote premise equipment have been out of service since noon Wednesday.

The remote premise equipment translates fiber optic information into a signal that can be transmitted through copper wiring. This equipment was installed in 1986. A bad jumper was discovered around noon yesterday and replaced. After replacing the jumper the translator equipment failed. Further troubleshooting discovered multiple failures in the system which could not be corrected.

As a result, two newer pieces of equipment were prepared to replace the older remote premise equipment. Early this morning, the newer equipment was in place and one call service loop was installed and tested. The test was successful. Information Technology, Verizon and other vendors are working throughout the morning to complete the installation of 100 connections to get the telephone service operational. Information Services expects telephone service to be restored by noon today.

Offices affected by the outage: Ott Cribbs Public Safety building, Parks & Recreation, Water Annex, Fire Station 1, Fire Prevention, Facility Services, Traffic Operations, Streets, Fleet Services, Neighborhood Services Main Street location, and Fire Ready Reserve.
