City Seeks To Fill Two Youth Board Vacancies by Cheryel Carpenter High school students with an interest in volunteer service on a City Council appointed board or commission have until Thursday, June 10 to return applications to the Office of the Mayor and Council. Eligible students must reside in Arlington and be a junior or senior when the school year begins this fall. Two boards currently have youth member vacancies, the Library Board and the Parks and Recreation Board. "Input from the youth of Arlington is critical for both the Library and Parks Boards since a large amount of the utilization for both of these City services results from citizens under the age of 18," Mayor Bob Cluck said. The Library Board The youth member serves in an advisory capacity to the Library Director and the City Council on issues related to library services for a one-year term. Meets every fourth Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The Parks and Recreation Board The youth member serves in an advisory capacity to the City Council on issues related to the acquisition, maintenance, operation and use of parks, playgrounds and open spaces in the city for a one-year term. Meets every second Monday at 6:30 p.m. Applications are available in the Office of the Mayor and Council at City Hall and in area high school and private school principal and counselor offices. The application is also online at http://www.ci.arlington.tx.us/volunteer/pdf/board_youth_application.pdf.The application requires information about related extracurricular activities along with a brief description of why the youth applicant feels qualified to serve on a board. The application also requires parental authorization or signature. Applications can be mailed to the Office of the Mayor and Council, P.O. Box 90231, Arlington, TX 76004-3231 or faxed to 817-459-6120. Applications will be evaluated by the City Council on June 22 and terms of service for new appointees will begin July 1.
