Energy Efficient Lights in Traffic Signals Projected to Save Dollars by Cheryel Carpenter At 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, a contractor will complete the final phase of a traffic safety program projected to lower the City’s energy costs. Assistant Traffic Operations Manager Belinda Younger-Gurley said the new lights are projected to reduce Arlington’s energy costs to operate upgraded traffic signals by 85 to 90 percent, saving the city an estimated $259,000 annually. Public Works Director Mike Hasler said the program is one of several efforts being undertaken by the City of Arlington to meet the new energy consumption reduction requirements of U.S. Senate Bill 5. A contractor is replacing existing incandescent bulbs in about 11,800 traffic lights at 243 intersections throughout Arlington. Amtech Lighting Services of Anaheim, Calif. is the contractor who is leading the Arlington installation of energy efficient light emitting diode units, which are most commonly known as LED units. Because of the extended lifespan of the LED, city officials say workforce productivity will be enhanced. Public Works officials say more time can be devoted to delivering a broader and higher level of traffic services to the public. "The LED upgrades will help us raise the quality of services and lower energy costs," Hasler said. Tuesday’s LED upgrade will occur at 1 p.m. at the Randol Mill Road and Magic Mile intersection near the Ameriquest Field in Arlington. |
