Arlington Park and Recreation Board to Consider Off-leash Dog Area at Richard Simpson Park by Cheryel Carpenter Due to the success of the "Barks for Parks" event last October that attracted hundreds of dogs and their owners, the City of Arlington Parks and Recreation Department is scheduled to present a proposal to the Park and Recreation Board to allow dogs to run off-leash at Richard Simpson Park on a part-time basis. "The Richard Simpson Park in west Arlington has proven very popular with dog owners who have called the Parks Department to request an off-leash facility at this location," said Park Planning Division Manager Gordon Robertson. Public comment is welcomed when the Park and Recreation Board considers the proposal at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 12 in the Parks and Recreation Board Room at 717 Main St. The proposal includes the installation of a fence to allow dogs to roam, romp and play, Robertson said. The off-leash area will only be open on a part-time basis. The days of operation have not been determined, but two days a week, or every first and third weekend of each month, are under consideration. On other days, dogs visiting the park would require a leash. An entry fee will be required and all proceeds will be used to cover the cost of park maintenance and to fund a full-time dog park at another location in the City, Robertson said. Current plans are to raise funds to build a full-time facility adjacent to the proposed Animal Services Center in southeast Arlington. After hearing the proposal and receiving public comment on Monday, April 12 the Park Board is scheduled to vote on the proposal on Monday, May 10.
