Media Advisory: Construction of Massive Pedestrian Bridge
Provides Key Link in 8-Mile Trail System
Raising of 160-foot bridge span will connect trails in Fort Worth, Grand Prairie

What: Raising of a 160-foot pedestrian bridge spanning the Trinity River. Cranes and construction personnel will put the main span of the bridge in place, completing a major phase of construction.

When: Wednesday, Nov. 26, approximately 11:30 a.m. to noon
Because construction schedules are somewhat unpredictable, the bridge may be put into place slightly earlier or later than expected. Members of the media may call Michelle Rice (682-597-6438) in the morning to receive a more exact time.

Why: The bridge is a key component of a new regional pedestrian trail along the Trinity River. Metroplex residents should be made aware that construction on the project is progressing and soon will offer new opportunities for hiking, biking and other fitness activities.

Background: This is part of a $2.4 million project completing 8 miles of trail along the Trinity River from Fort Worth to Grand Prairie. Funding has been provided by a $940,000 City of Arlington 1997 park bond, a $1.2 million grant from Texas Parks and Wildlife, a $100,000 donation from the River Legacy Foundation and $160,000 in labor and equipment from Tarrant County. Construction began in fall 2002 and is expected to be complete in May 2004. The project includes the pedestrian bridge, a portion of trail linking two existing sections, wetland enhancements, trail amenities, a parking lot and a park entry off of Collins/State Highway 157.
