Arlington Police Chief to Receive State Leadership Award by Cheryel Carpenter Arlington Police Chief Theron Bowman will be presented the Outstanding Local Leader award by the John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute. The award will be presented during the 19th Annual Young Professionals Leadership Forum on Sept. 20 in Austin. Each year, the John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute recognizes individuals who demonstrate high standards of ethics and a commitment to leadership in their state and community. Police Chief Bowman earned a doctorate of philosophy in Urban and Public Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1997. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Executive Institute and the FBI National Academy. He has served on various community boards, committees and law enforcement associations, and his outreach programs have addressed youth crime and victimization, crime prevention, workforce diversification and policing strategies. Bowman joined the Arlington Police Department in 1983 and his been the Chief of Police since 1999. Bowman is one of three to be recognized on Sept. 20. The Outstanding State Leader award will be presented to Lt. Governor David Dewhurst. Created in 1995 by the Texas Legislature, the Institute at the University of Texas at the Permian Basin honors the public service of the late John Ben Shepperd who served as Texas Secretary of State from 1951 to 1953 and Texas Attorney General from 1953 to 1957. |
