A Mosquito Tests Positive for West Nile in Arlington by Cheryel Carpenter A mosquito sampled last week in Arlington has tested positive for the West Nile Virus, according to a notice received Thursday from the Tarrant County Health Department. The mosquito was found in the 4000 block of West Pioneer Parkway near the intersection of Park Springs Boulevard in west Arlington. City health officials say this is the first case of a mosquito testing positive for the virus in the Arlington area this year. Assistant Director of Neighborhood Services Bob Byrd continues to re-emphasize the need to eliminate mosquito-breeding sites. "We are advising residents in this area to take the necessary precautions to avoid being bitten by a mosquito," Byrd said. "We are reminding residents to remove all stagnant or standing water in places where mosquitoes can breed." The city is also encouraging residents to minimize outdoor exposure during dawn and dusk, dress in light-colored, long-sleeve clothing when outside and use an insect repellent containing DEET. It is important to follow label instructions when using any type of repellent. The positive test in Arlington, coupled with findings in Dallas County, clearly indicate that the West Nile Virus is widespread in the Metroplex and will be a continuing issue for residents. The City will continue to work closely with the Tarrant County Public Health Department. More information is available at www.ci.arlington.tx.us in English and Spanish.
