"One Book, One Arlington" Program Unites Readers

Arlington residents are reading the same book with plans to discuss it in organized groups as part of a citywide reading initiative being coordinated by the Arlington Public Library.

The Arlington Public Library’s 80th Birthday Celebration continues in May with the "One Book, One Arlington" program. The book is John Graves’ Goodbye to a River.

"These types of programs are sweeping across the country, and we wanted to be a part of that," said 80th Birthday Celebration Co-Chair Bethany Ponder.

According to Ponder, Goodbye to a River will interest those who enjoy nature, the outdoors, Texas history and Texas archaeology. The character in the book visits with people along the river who share historical accounts of their area, which includes central and north Texas history.

Goodbye to a River was published in 1960 about a 175-mile, 3-week canoe trip down the lower Brazos River. The book can be found on the shelf of any public library in the city.
