Arlington has a rich heritage. Through its preservation efforts, Arlington has a National Register District, three National Register sites and structures and 35 Texas Historical Markers.

National Historic Preservation Week is May 5-12. The theme is "Cities, Suburbs, and Countryside." Since 1971, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has sponsored this one- week celebration.

In Arlington, Preservation Week 2003 will be observed with certificates of appreciation from the Landmark Preservation Commission honoring two local individuals for their efforts in supporting preservation in Arlington. The honorees are Xavier Carrillo and Greg Morse.

Mayor Odom, as one of his last official acts as the outgoing mayor of Arlington, will present a Preservation Week Proclamation to the Landmark Preservation Commission. Accepting the proclamation on behalf of the 9-member Landmark Preservation Commission will be Commission Chairperson Suzanne Sweek.

The mission of the Landmark Preservation Commission is to provide leadership in identifying, protecting and developing Arlington’s historic architectural landmarks, neighborhoods, designed landscapes and artifacts in places of cultural importance. The Commission is also charged with educating citizens and visitors so that they may reflect on the past and understand its relationship to the present and future.
