Tour for Life Pet Adoption Event is Sunday, April 13 in Arlington by Cheryel Carpenter The City of Arlington will feature its new Mobile Pet Adoption and Response Unit in conjunction with the North Texas Animal Shelter Coalition and the Tour for Life pet adoption campaign this Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event will take place at Moritz Cadillac and BMW of Arlington located at 2001 N. Collins St. in north Arlington. Tour For Life is North Shore Animal League America’s cross-country cooperative adoption event. This year, three of the League’s 35-foot mobile adoption vehicles will travel throughout the United States and work with nearly 100 local animal organizations to find loving homes for the orphaned dogs and cats they shelter. Since 2000, Tour For Life has not only placed many needy animals with excellent adoptive families, it has also brought awareness to shelters as the best places from which to adopt pets. Tour For Life also announces the League’s annual international Pet Adoptathon, which unites nearly 2000 animal organizations working to find homes for all the dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens in their care. Last year, more than 1,200 animals were adopted during the Pet Adoptathon weekend. In addition to League’s 35-foot mobile adoption vehicle, the City’s mobile pet adoption and response unit will be on site Sunday to house cats and dogs available for adoption. Members of the North Texas Animal Shelter Coalition, comprised of more than 50 area municipal and private shelters, will provide the animals. Arlington’s new $24,000 mobile unit was custom built for the City of Arlington and totally funded by both corporate and private donations. The unit can hold 12 animals and is equipped with a generator, lights, a fresh water tank, air conditioning and heating, a wastewater tank, rescue equipment, and flip-up awnings for easy viewing of the animals. The unit is being utilized at special events to increase the visibility of the shelter, promote the adoption of shelter animals, provide support in the event of an emergency and to promote responsible pet ownership, according to Animal Services Manager Mike Bass. |
